Problems with the CDONTS email component
The CDONTS component is generally more complicated to setup, as it relies on a separate SMTP service or local email server to relay email (which must also be setup on your server or PC).  CDONTS cannot connect to an outside email server directly, you need to setup & install Microsoft's SMTP service on your PC in addition to the CDONTS.

When using CDONTS, you would typically enter "localhost" as your SMTP email server in PDAdmin's email setup.  When PDshop sends email it would go to the CDONTS component, which relays the email to the local SMTP email service, which relays it to the recipient or another outside email server.  This is the reason Microsoft has discontinued support for this component.

The CDONTS component was replaced by CDOSYS, which is built into most versions of Windows today; CDONTS is often difficult to troubleshoot, and it is not capable of confirming if the mail was sent (in fact, it will always say "message sent" regardless, PDshop can only confirm if the message was received by the component, but not whether the email was sent further than the component.  We recommend using an ASP email component such as "ASPemail" or one of the others listed on our site, 3rd party components are much easier to troubleshoot and use.  CDOSYS support is included in the Plus & Advanced Editions of PDshop.  Most web hosting services are migrating to CDOSYS or other 3rd party components.
